East Kilbride
Strathclyde, Scotland

Initially operated by eleven scout troops, serving towns and villages in the East Kilbride - Strathaven area. From 1984 to 1994 a similar set of seven stamps was issued each year, with either a colour or date change, or a single special design included for one year only, sadly I cannot illustrate all designs in each year as I have not yet been able to obtain copies. From 1982 to 1994 the sheet layout also included a special label giving instructions for the use of the stamps - this is illustrated with each issue wherever possible. Did not operate in 2003.

East Kilbride is a district in the Scout Area of Lanarkshire. Since the start of this service there have been organisational changes eg. 1st Strathaven Scouts is now known as 39th Lanarkshire, 6th Kilbride is 61st Lanarkshire and 14th East Kilbride is 138th Lanarkshire.

East Kilbride Poster

1982 (7th December)

1982 issue

Type 1, 25x38mm, designed by the project committee. Printed in sheets of 36 (6 rows of 6 - 32 stamps with a label at each corner) self adhesive labels on an imperforate backing sheet by John Thompson, East Kilbride. This photocopy illustrates the sheet format. Some sheets were later part or fully line rouletted. 170 first day covers were produced on specially designed envelopes, some signed by the project committee. Proceeds allocated 70% group funds, 10% Save the Children Fund & the rest to cover expenses. The red shade is somewhat variable.

1983 (6th December)

1983 issue

Type 2, 25x38mm, designed by the project committee. Printed in sheets of 36 (6 rows of 6 - 32 stamps with a label at each corner) self adhesive labels on an imperforate backing sheet by John Thompson, East Kilbride. Proceeds mainly to Group funds. First day covers were produced on specially designed envelopes, some signed by the project committee.

I am unable to show the full sheet layout for all the following designs (1984-1994) but they were arranged somewhat randomly in the sheet, 32 stamps in 7 designs meaning that there were differing numbers of some designs. See the example from 1988. When dates were later added to each stamp in the sheet these were added separately, meaning that there were noticeable variations in the positioning of the date in relation to the main design - in fact in at least one case the date was underlined, presumably by accident. The following three illustrations show examples of these minor differences.

date displaced slightly to right & down date starts under 1st or 2nd L of DOLLAN date underlined

1984 (3rd December)

1984 issue

Types 3 to 9, 25x38mm, designed by the project committee.
