Hatfield Peverel
|
Types 1 & 2, 60x30mm & 30x30mm, designed for Beacon Hill by Peter Horlock (PL) and Gary Martin (Scout) respectively & printed by Barham & Moore, Chelmsford in sheets of 30 (6 rows each of 4x5p & 1x10p), line rouletted about 5. Overprinted as shown for use in Hatfield Peverel.
Types 3 & 4, 30x30mm & 60x30mm, designed by Clive Lonie (PL) & printed by Barham & Moore, Chelmsford in panes of 14 (2 rows each of 5x5p & 2x10p), line rouletted about 5. First day covers bearing both stamps were produced on plain envelopes.
I have used the term "panes of 14" as these stamps were printed together with those of two other posts in a composite sheet of 6 rows of 7, from the top there were 2 rows each of 1st Terling, 1st Blackwater Land & 1st Hatfield Peverel.
Types 5 & 6, 30x30mm & 60x30mm, designed by Alan Marks (PL) & Alistair French (PL), printed by East Essex District in sheets of 24 (2 rows each of 5x5p & 2x10p), line rouletted about 5. Souvenir "First day of service" covers bearing two of each stamp were produced on plain envelopes in 1986, 1987 and 1988 and one of each stamp in 1989.
During 1989 stocks of the 5p value began to run out and the East Essex 5p was brought in to supplement supplies, in 1990 the East Essex 10p was also introduced. Souvenir covers bearing the East Essex 5p and Hatfield Peverel 10p, dated 12th December 1989, were produced on plain envelopes. It is even possible to find a souvenir cover dated 18th December 1989 carrying a pair of 1983 stamps.
Types 7 & 8, 30x30mm, designed by M. J. Southall (ADC Activities), printed by Barham East Essex District in sheets of 24 (6 rows of 4) in se tenant pairs across the sheet, line rouletted about 6.
Types 9 & 10, 30x30mm, produced in booklets of 12 (2 rows of 6) in se tenant pairs across the pane, guillotined on three sides, line rouletted about 6 between stamps.
Also in 1992 a very small quantity of the unsold 1983 5p issue were hand uprated in either black or blue ink to 10p - only about 35 of each were prouced. Not really considered to be within the scope of this catalogue as they are so easily produced from spare 1983 stamps.
Types 11 & 12, 41x21mm, designed by Martin Phillips, printed by offset litho on self-adhesive labels in sheets of 35 (7 rows of 5 - first 3 rows type 11, row 4 containing 3x type 12 2x type 11, last 3 rows type 12), this layout gives the possibility of 5 vertically se tenant pairs or one horizontally se tenant pair. First day covers bearing both stamps were produced on plain envelopes. In error souvenir covers bearing both these stamps were again produced on plain envelopes in 1994 - they should have been fdcs for the paler reprint but the originals were reused by mistake.
Types 13 & 14, 41x21mm, designed by Martin Phillips, printed by offset litho on self-adhesive labels in sheets of 35 (7 rows of 5 - first 3 rows type 13, row 4 containing 3x type 14 2x type 13, last 3 rows type 14), this layout gives the possibility of 5 vertically se tenant pairs or one horizontally se tenant pair.
I have been unable to find any information regarding the activities of this post from 1996 to 1999 - any contributions would be gratefully received.
