3rd Witham
Essex, England

Operated by 3rd Witham Scouts, delivering to Witham, west of the railway. Prior to 1990 a dual tariff system applied throughout the East Essex District, 5p for witin the area where posted, 10p for onward transmission to one of the other participating areas - see the East Essex post for further details.

3rd Witham is a Group in the East Essex District within the Scout County of Essex.

Types 1 & 2, 30x60mm/30x30mm respectively, designed by Stephen Green (scout) & printed using offset litho by Barham & Moore, Chelmsford in sheets of 30 (6 rows of 4x5p+1x10p), line rouletted about 5.



1983

Types 3 & 4, 30x30mm/30x60mm respectively, designed by Stephen Green (PL) & printed using offset litho by Barham & Moore, Chelmsford in sheets of 42 (6 rows of 5x5p+2x10p), line rouletted about 5. First day covers were produced on plain white envelopes. Re-used in early 1984 until new stamps ready.

Types 5 & 6, 30x30mm/60x30mm respectively, designed by Barry Rodwell (Scout leader) & printed using offset litho by M.R.C. Print Ltd, Maldon in sheets of 14 (2 rows of 5x5p+2x10p), line rouletted about 10. First day covers were produced on plain white envelopes.

Types 7 & 8, 30x30mm, designed by M Nicolas & printed electrostatically by East Essex District in sheets of 24 (6 rows of 4), initially issued imperforate then later line rouletted about 7 (bottom margin imperf) giving 3 varieties in total. First day covers were produced on plain white envelopes.

Both designed by M Nicolas & printed electrostatically by East Essex District in sheets of 24 (6 rows of 4), initially issued imperforate then later line rouletted about 7 (bottom margin imperf) giving 3 varieties in total. Initial stocks of the 5p were printed on the gummed side and nearly all were destroyed, the reprint being made available by the 10th. First day covers were produced (dated 10th) on plain white envelopes.

Type 17, 30x30mm, this year the rate was increased to a uniform 10p to any destination - remaining stocks of 1989 5p stamps were hand-uprated to 10p in black ink.

Type 18, 30x30mm, designed by Christopher Pullen (PL) & printed using offset litho in sheets of 54 (6 rows of 9) by East Essex District. Initially issued imperforate, later line rouletted about 6 giving two varieties.

1994 - 1999

3rd Witham continued to use up the spare joint issue stamps even though 1st Witham had again issued it's own stamps.
