Beacon Hill Poster

1981 (12th December)

Beacon Hill 1981

Type 1, 55x26mm, designed by M. J. Southall, scout leader. Printed offset litho by Barham & Moore, Chelmsford in sheets of 20 (4 rows of 5), rouletted about 5. Side & bottom magins trimmed off, no perforation between stamps and top margin. As all margins were imperforate this provided eight partially perforated variations from the norm (in fact only six out of twenty were fully perforated on all sides). First day covers exist on plain envelopes.

1982 (4th December)

Beacon Hill 1982

Types 2 to 3, 60x29mm or 30x29mm, 5p centerby Peter Horlock (PL) & 10p by Gary Martin (Scout). Printed by Barham & Moore in sheets of 30 (6 rows of 4x5p & 1x10p se tenant). Line rouletted about 5 (including between stamps and margins). First day covers bearing both stamps produced on plain envelopes.

1983 (3rd December)

Beacon Hill 1983

Types 4 to 10, 60x29mm or 30x29mm, designed by Callum M Rogers (PL). Printed by Barham & Moore in sheets of 42 (6 rows of 5x5p & 2x10p se tenant). Line rouletted about 5. First day covers bearing a set of stamps produced on special locally designed and printed envelopes.

1984 (1st December)

Overprint 1984 Overprint 1984

Types 11 to 17, 60x29mm or 30x29mm, previous years excess stamps overprinted with one of the two overprints shown. An economy attampt that failed due to the flimsy nature of a perforated sheet and only 60 sheets were ever issued, almost all of which were sold to the general public. No first day covers were produced.

1984 (8th December)

Beacon Hill 1984

Types 18 to 24, 60x29mm or 30x29mm, because of the above problem a reprint in green was rushed through. Printed in offset litho by M.R.C. Print, New Malden in sheets of 14, each sheet containing two strips of 5x5p & 2x10p se tenant. (Original printer's sheet contained two strips of Beacon Hill, two strips of Tiptree & two strips of Rivenhall issues - all plain green - these were separated before distribution). Line rouletted about 10. First day covers bearing a set of stamps produced on plain envelopes.

1985 (7th December)

Beacon Hill 1985 Beacon Hill 1985

Types 25 to 32, 29x29mm, designed by Marcus Giles (PL) & printed by East Essex District in sheets of 24 (6 rows of 4 se-tenant). Sheets appeared in various conditions - initially issued imperforate (including those used for FDCs), then a few sheets were forme rouletted about 5, finally the majority were line rouletted about 7. In the latter case the bottom margin was imperforate. Hence there are four versions for each stamp, (A) perf 7, (B) perf 7 three sides only, (C) perf 5 & (D) imperforate. First day covers bearing all eight stamps (in two se tenant strips) produced on plain envelopes.

Very few (about 7 sheets) of the original 5p printing were sold & the rest destroyed. Two first day covers each bearing a strip of four stamps se tenant produced on plain envelopes, 10p values on 6th December & 5p values on the 8th. A souvenir cover with one stamp of each value was produced for the post bus service provided to outlying areas on two Saturdays.
